Hello Carroll students and parents! Today we continued learning about fossils! Students were able to remove their fossil from the play-dough, much like paleontologists dig fossils from the ground. They completed their "Fossil Frenzy" lab and then worked on "Fossil Graphic Organizer". All content for both of these assignments can be found on the Mumley Fossil Page. Homework
Today was fossil day!! Overarching Competency: "Students can analyze evidence from the fossil record and landforms in order to draw conclusions regarding the history of the earth." Students first learned about the history of the Earth and how humans make up just the very sliver of time at the end. They then read about how different fossils are made and even got to create their own fossils in the "Fossil Frenzy" activity on Canvas. Homework:
Happy Thanksgiving and welcome back from break!
The 3 and half days we had last week made it feel like I hadn't been to school in ages! But it is good to be back! Today we introduced the new topic and project to the students by looking at fossils of different organisms! Students were put into groups of 4 and told to look at their fossil fact sheet and come up with an "I know", "I think", and "I wonder" about their fossil. Tomorrow we will begin to uncover what fossils are and how they are used to help tell the story of Earth's history. Important Today I handed back assessments from both our written test and our Paideia discussion. Students, please remember to update your portfolio with these assessments. Take a picture of them and insert them onto the Google Document template for each standard. Those templates can be found on the "Competency Resources" page under the 8th grade tab. Then insert that Google Document into your portfolio. If you have any questions, please talk to Mr. Mumley. Happy Friday Carroll students!
Today we reviewed for the Molecular Biology check-in (assessment) after reflecting on yesterday's fantastic paideia. Check-In Review Guide For students to be successful on the check-in on Monday they must:
The check-in will be on Monday and will be reported into PowerSchool before Thanksgiving. Today students participated in a paideia class discussion with the help of Ms. Gaskins from the learning commons. The topic was diet and nutrition. I was SO impressed by the participating students, their contributions to the discussion and their questions. This class discussion was assessed and will be uploaded onto PowerSchool soon! For students who were not prepared and unable to participate in the discussion: Please use FlipGrid to answer the discussion questions in 90 seconds or less. Go to FlipGrid.com, log in with your Wake ID and use the following code to post your response. This assignment will be due on Monday November 19th! Code: 7a530005 Tomorrow we will review for the Competency Check-in for Monday.
Today was paideia prep during class! Students worked on answer questions related to diets that will prepare them for our paideia tomorrow.
Important: Only students with COMPLETED paideia prep questions (#'s 1-5) will participate in the class discussion, which is part of students' overall competency grade. All resources can be found on the Mumley Food page on MumleyScience. Scroll down and find all the links to the articles and questions. Today students were put in six different groups covering 3 different popular diets:
Groups were given articles and instructed to "talk to the text" in an effort to better understand the content and to interact with the reading. Then groups discussed what they learned from the readings. Tomorrow students will work together to answer a series of questions that will prepare them for our whole class discussion called a paideia! This paideia will happen on Thursday. All resources for the paideia can be found on MumleyFood on my website! Scroll to the bottom right before vocabulary. Is it Friday already! Amazing. This week has absolutely FLOWN by!
Today is science we "Talked to the Text" with THIS article. Students then completed a graphic organizer located HERE summarizing what the Macronutrients were and why they are important! All these and other necessary resources can be found on the Molecular Biology page. Homework (**long weekend, no excuses**)
Have a fantastic weekend! Tomorrow is Friday! The week has been flying by. Today in 8th grade we continued our learning around how our body processes food to keep us alive! Students completed their "Body Systems and Energy" flow chart before starting on their own projects by the same title. Students are required to communicate, in any way that they choose (Video, writing, comic book, podcast, slide show) how the body takes in food and oxygen to perform cellular respiration. Please be sure to include the following:
I have attached Wednesday's activity script HERE to help with the project. Take a look if you need a hand! |
